From Vision to Reality: The Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services
When you combine homegrown loyalty and commitment to a cause with belief and determination, great things happen. Warren Gast, a lifelong resident of southwestern Michigan, once again demonstrated his willingness to act as a catalyst for Lakeland and its mission to improve the quality of life for all southwestern Michigan residents. Warren’s concern was that people were looking outside of the area for quality health care services. Warren and his wife, Lou, inspired others to join in the effort to keep people coming to Lakeland for care in all stages of life. The first to accept their challenge - Marcie and Ed Schalon, Warren’s sister and brother-in-law were joined by others with the same vision. The outcome became the Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services an unprecedented complex of outpatient services housed in a healing environment, where patients come first.
Warren and Lou contributed $2 million to Lakeland to help create the Center for Outpatient Services. Warren was an integral part of developing the concept and the services that needed to be offered so the residents of our communities would have access to the best care available. Gast played an important role in convincing other people of the merit of a Center for Outpatient Services. As a result, Marcie and Ed Schalon also supported the endeavor by donating $1 million.
Through this vision, the Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services was designed to meet the needs of southwest Michigan’s outpatients. The Center includes the Lester C. Tiscornia Surgical Center, the Margaret Beckley Upton Center for Health Enhancement, the Whirlpool Diagnostics and Imaging Center, and the Health Resource Library. It is also home to the Lakeland Pharmacy Shoppe and a deli that is open for lunch to the general public.
The Margaret Beckley Upton Center for Health Enhancement
When Lakeland HealthCare approached the Frederick S. Upton Foundation about being a part of their vision for the Center for Outpatient Services, the fit seemed perfect. The Upton Foundation committed $50,000 to the development of the Margaret Beckley Upton Center for Health Enhancement.
The Uptons have a legacy of commitment to health care in our community. In 1936, Frederick S. Upton became the first president of the St. Joseph Hospital Association, which later built Memorial Hospital in St. Joseph. He also served as president and as a director on the Memorial Hospital Board of Directors from 1951 to 1970.
The Center for Health Enhancement is named for Margaret Beckley Upton, Frederick’s wife and an active member of many twin city organizations throughout her lifetime. The Margaret Beckley Upton Center for Health Enhancement provides comprehensive services aligned with various health issues, such as osteoporosis, cardiac disease, stress management, and breast health. The scope of services will include education, screening and definitive diagnostic testing, ancillary programs, and products. The Women’s Center, which is a part of the Center for Health Enhancement, provides a full-spectrum of services designed for a woman’s special health needs.
The Lester C. Tiscornia Surgery Center
Lester Tiscornia’s dedication to helping build the finest possible local health care system began in 1950, and never wavered. He was committed to bringing enhanced health care services and better patient care to each and every member of our community. In Lester’s memory and through the generosity of a $50,000 donation from the Tiscornia Foundation, The Lester C. Tiscornia Surgery Center was designed for ambulatory patients - those who can come to the Center to have their surgery and go home the same day. The facility is easily accessible. A drive-up exit helps to assure additional privacy and minimize walking following the patient’s surgery. The state-of-the-art surgical center allows patients to undergo their surgical care in a much more comfortable environment than what is offered in a traditional hospital setting. The patient experience begins and ends in a private room where family members may be involved in their care. Surgeries performed at the Center are efficient, minimizing the amount of time that the patients and their families have to wait, either preoperatively or postoperatively. For surgeons, it is also an efficient facility, providing less delay between surgical procedures.
The Whirlpool Diagnostic and Imaging Center
The Whirlpool Foundation committed $500,000 to fund the Whirlpool Diagnostics and Imaging Center, located within the Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services. Diagnostics and imaging services include phlebotomy services (blood collection and testing), electrocardiogram (EKG) technology, radiology – including a PET/CT scanner, the most advanced imaging technology available at this time –ultrasound, vacuum-assisted core biopsy, digital mammography and X-ray. Until the Center was built, diagnostic and imaging services at Lakeland were fragmented and spread throughout many different locations. The Whirlpool Diagnostics and Imaging Center features all of these services in a centralized location that is convenient for patients. The Center was also the first location within Lakeland to offer digital imaging technology. Digital imaging decreases the patient’s exposure to radiation, shortens overall exam time and affords greater accuracy in diagnosis and assessment.
The Health Resource Library
The Health Resource Library in Lakeland’s Center for Outpatient Services provides a great opportunity for all members of the community to access health care information. The Center is fully stocked with information of all types, including computers with Internet access and a list of reliable health care Web sites. Specialized sections focus on areas of care, such as orthopedics, heart care, obstetrics, oncology and child care. Just like a library, materials can be checked out for free but need to be returned by the due date.
The Future of Health Care, Now
The future of health care technology in our community has become a reality at the Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services. Years of planning, design and construction came to fruition when the Center opened in March of 2003. This venture would have been impossible without the dedication and foresight of some of our areas most dedicated citizens and business people, their passion and unwavering support of our community.
"The gifts that these key individuals have made will enhance patient care in our community for years to come," said Leo Soorus, vice president of advancement for Lakeland. "It is because of them that we will be able to truly serve our area’s outpatients and continue to meet their expectations for years to come."
