At Lakeland HealthCare, we’re proud of the care we deliver to our communities. It is our mission to provide high-quality, compassionate heathcare services. As a part of this mission, we work to continuously improve the quality of the services we provide. We benchmark our care against national standards to assess how we are performing to make sure we are providing our patients with the best possible healthcare services.
We are proud to announce that in 2008, Lakeland HealthCare again received full accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
Our Team of Professionals
Lakeland has more than 3,000 employees who provide clinical and supportive services at several locations throughout southwest Michigan. We work with approximately 300 primary and specialty care physicians to provide high-quality healthcare services close to home.
State-of-the-art Technologies and Innovative Care
As a community hospital, we are proud to offer leading-edge technologies that are normally available only at large hospitals. This means that people do not have to travel to seek high-quality care and cutting-edge technology. Lakeland currently offers the newest imaging technologies, including, PET/CT scanning, digital mammography and MRI in a totally digital environment.
The Heart Center at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph serves as a training site that teaches cardiologists from around the state about advanced procedures for peripheral vascular disease. The training program allows physicians to gain the skills necessary under the supervision of highly skilled, experienced Lakeland specialists. Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph is one of only 20 sites in the nation offering the training, and one of only two in Michigan.
The Keystone Initiative
In November 2003, Lakeland began participating in the Keystone ICU Project created by Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore. The Keystone project is a quality initiative that focuses on increasing patient safety in ICUs by combining evidence-based medicine with quality improvement. The 17-bed Critical Care Unit (CCU) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph provides care for more than 1,200 patients each year. Four full-time Intensivists work with patients to provide specialized care 24/7. Lakeland is one of more than 90 hospitals across Michigan participating in the Keystone ICU project.
The CCU team is constantly measuring and collecting data to show the effect the initiative has on a patient’s length of stay and condition. Participation in the Keystone ICU project has been a great asset to the CCU team, providing positive improvements in the areas of quality, patient safety and employee satisfaction.
Intensivists in the Critical Care Unit
Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph began an intensivist program more than eight years ago and currently has four intensivists providing care in the CCU. Lakeland’s CCU is an open system. That is, patients are admitted by their personal physician or specialist. The intensivists provide consultative care and are available 24/7. Our intensivists provide leadership for the entire critical care team, coordinating the care of each CCU patient.
Hospitalists at Lakeland
Hospitalist programs are relatively new to the health care industry, but are well-received because the patient has immediate and around-the-clock access to a physician during their hospital stay. There are currently four hospitalists on the medical staff at Lakeland. The availability of hospitalists improves the patients’ quality of care by allowing them continuous access to a physician. Once the patient is admitted, they are seen regularly by the hospitalist who is in constant contact with the patient’s primary care physician. They work together to ensure that the patient receives the best possible care.
