Following an on-site review, Lakeland HealthCare earned the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for Primary Stroke Centers from The Joint Commission. This prestigious status signifies that the care the stroke center provides meets the unique, specialized needs of stroke patients. 

Lakeland HealthCare was honored with the 2008 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence for providing excellent care to patients in its intensive care units (ICU). Lakeland HealthCare is one of 49 VHA-member hospitals to be recognized for preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia in patients in the intensive care unit.

Lakeland Continuing Care Center (LCCC), St. Joseph, received Michigan's Quality Improvement Organization's (MPRO) 2007 Michigan Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Nursing Home Setting for the categories of pain, physical restraints, and pressure ulcers.


Environmental Protection Agency Partner for Asthma Action Award 2007 for excellence in the area of asthma education for the Southwest Michigan Asthma Coalition (SMAC).

The Platinum Stake Award 2007 and the Michigans Great Southwest Award 2007 from Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce for capital investments in facilities, and for bringing national attention to the community through excellent business and service practices.

From the Michigan Peer Review Organization (operating on behalf of Medicare/Medicaid and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), two awards in five categories - three for inpatient treatment of heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia, and two in the emergency room for treatment of heart attack and pneumonia (2006).

Recognized by the Gift of Life, a national society for excellence in patient and family education; about the importance of organ and tissue donation - Lakeland was one of only 300 hospitals nationally to receive the 2006 U.S. Health & Human Services (HHS) Medal of Honor.

Lakeland-affiliated Mercy Health Clinic was awarded the 2005 Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for Best Practices in Innovations in Diabetes Care.

Lakeland received the 2003 MHA Safety Award. Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph named among the nations Best Hospitals for peripheral vascular intervention in Money Magazine (2003).

Lakeland board president William Johnson received the 2003 Michigan Health and Hospital Associations Health Care Leadership Award.
