Our volunteers assist with a wide variety of items at our hospital. The list below details some of the most common activities for our volunteers. If there is an activity not shown that you would be interested in, please let us know.

Admitting/Lab Department      
Description:
This volunteer assists and escorts outpatient laboratory patients.
Requirements:  
Volunteer must have excellent customer service skills and must be able to push a wheelchair. 

Auxiliary Board
Description:
These volunteers serve on committees such as scholarships and special projects. They serve in various positions with a common goal to enhance patient comfort at Lakeland. 
Requirements:
While flexibility is key, commitment must be strong to serve at least two years.

Blood Drives
Description:
Every 56 days Lakeland Niles holds a blood drive for the  Michigan Community Blood Center.  Volunteers assist with various duties from registration to canteen.
Requirements:   
Volunteers require training at the Niles hospital site prior to the drive.

Breakfast Crew       
Description:  
We serve visitors and associates a light breakfast in the cafeteria.
Requirements:  
No cooking is required.  These volunteers do some stocking, making croissants, and run the cash register.  

Chaplaincy
Description:
Volunteer chaplains assist our hospital chaplain with patient visits.
Requirements:   Chaplaincy training is required.   Volunteers must be strong in customer service skills.

Childrens’ Tours
Description:  
Local pre-schools hold field trips to the hospital during the month of May.
Tour guides are needed to take groups of 10-15 to radiology, surgery, ER, OB, and the kitchen.   Tours last approximately two hours. 
Requirements:
The volunteer must be able to relate to small children

Clerical Assistant
Description:   
Our nursing floors need volunteers to assist them with answering telephones,
filing, and answering call lights.  
Requirements:  
This job requires great phone and customer service skills.

Cookie Bakers
Description:  
The volunteer bakes cookies and distributes to patient families and associates.
Requirements:
Volunteer must be able to walk, push a cart, and have great customer service skills. 

Courtesy Cart
Description:   
Drivers transport patients, families, and employees to and from their cars to the hospital.    The golf cart stays on hospital property. 
Requirements:  
Current driver’s license and great customer service skills.

Emergency Department (Adults 18 and older)
Description:  
This volunteer may be asked to clean instrument trays, change linens, transport patients and lab work and assist staff with patients.  They would also offer waiting families coffee and give wait time information as appropriate.
Requirements:  
On the job training by ER staff.   Volunteer must have excellent customer service skills and should be able to multi-task.  

Emergency Department (Teens)
Description:   
Volunteer teens can pass water to patients, transport patients in wheelchairs,  read to children, and assist with paperwork as requested.
Requirements:  
On the job training by ER staff.   Teen volunteer should have an interest in a medical field and be able to multi-task.

Fund Raisers & Special Projects
Description:  
These volunteers help with Auxiliary book sales, bake sales, and other special projects as well as annual Tree of Love project in November. 
Requirements:   
Willingness to learn new things and make new friends!

General Stores
Description:   
Unpack, label, and inventory supplies, deliver items to nursing units and perform other duties as requested.
Requirements:  
Volunteer must be able to stand and walk for several hours and push a cart.
Gift Shop  
Description:  
Our largest fund raiser, gift shop volunteers assist with sales clerk duties such as fresh flower orders for patients.  They make up gift bags for phone orders and personally deliver
to patients.
Requirements:  
Great customer service skills and willingness to help customers find the perfect gift.   Cash register training is provided.  

Health Resource Center
Description:  
This community library is a lending library open to the public.   All the current health information for patients and visitors is here.  Computers to assist people with Web M.D,
A viewing room for videos and CD’s, and a massage chair all add to the experience.
Requirements:   
Some computer experience and an interest in helping visitors find health information.

Information Desk Greeter
Description:
Escorts and assists in way finding.  Performs light clerical duties such as magazine, patient mail, newspaper, and flower deliveries. 
Requirements:
Excellent customer service skills.  Must be able to walk distances and push a wheelchair.  

Knitters
Description:  
This volunteer position can be performed in the comfort of your home!  Our
hospital delivers approximately 650 babies a year and we need baby blankets, booties, and hats!
Requirement: 
Must know how to knit, follow directions and deliver caps and blankets to the hospital

Popcorn Thursdays
Description:
Volunteers pop and bag popcorn from 11:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. for visitors, patients, and staff.   This fundraiser assists the Auxiliary to meet their pledged donations to the hospital.
Requirements:  
Volunteer must be able to push popcorn machine to and from the cafeteria and the lobby.     

Snack Trolley
Description:  
The Snack Trolley is a mobile unit that volunteers fill with light lunch items and deliver to visitors and departments.
Requirements:
Must be able to walk and push a cart for two hours and have great customer service skills.

Surgery Waiting
Description:  
Lobby volunteers serve as liaison between the surgery department and family members.
Requirements:  
Volunteers must have great phone and listening skills.   They must be able to relate to all age groups.  

Volunteer Office Assistant
Description:  
Volunteer assists with quarterly newsletters, mailings, and other clerical duties.
Requirements:   
Experience in Word Perfect and good organizational skills.
