| Lakeland Honors American Heart Month |
| (ST. JOSEPH) – To honor American Heart Month, Lakeland HealthCare’s HeartSafe program will host events this February to show community members how they can cut their risk of heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the single-leading cause of death of Americans, and it will cause nearly half of all deaths this year. However, with education and awareness, heart disease can largely be prevented. Lakeland HealthCare will offer “Heart Lessons,” a free program that teaches participants about heart disease, their risk factors, and how they can decrease their chances of heart attack or stroke. The class will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 11, at Paw Paw Lake Medical Center, Coloma, and from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, in the Community Room at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph. Pre-registration for this free class is required. To register, call (269) 556-2808 or (866) 260-7544. Community members are also invited to get their cholesterol checked – no appointment needed – at convenient and affordable screenings this month. Lakeland will be offering affordable screenings for cholesterol, osteoporosis and body composition analysis at the Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services in St. Joseph every Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wellness screenings will be available at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 5. For more information, call (269) 556-2808 or (866) 260-7544. In addition, proper diagnosis and management of diabetes can help prevent or delay heart disease. Lakeland will provide a free program designed to help anyone with higher-than-normal blood sugar levels who is at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This program does not require a physician referral and helps area residents change their lifestyles to delay – or avoid – the onset of diabetes and its related complications. The class will be held on Monday, February 22, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., at the Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services, St. Joseph. Pre-registration for this free pre-diabetes class is required. For more information or to register, please call (269) 927-5465 or (269) 683-5510 ext. 5465. Area residents who are unable to attend any of these events are encouraged to discover their risk of heart disease and learn how to lower this risk from the privacy of home. Visit www.lakelandhealth.org/heartsafe and click on the HeartSafe Risk Assessment banner to fill out a free online questionnaire to determine your risk of heart disease. You will receive an immediate score and information to help evaluate your present condition. At your request, a member of the HeartSafe team can contact you to discuss your results.
