The Lakeland Sleep Disorder and Treatment Centers, located in Niles and St. Joseph, are designed to combine the latest technology in treating sleep
disorders with a home-like atmosphere for patients. Patients sleep in rooms that feature queen-sized beds and flat-screen televisions in an environment that controls sound and extraneous light. The equipment and the polysonography technologists are camoflauged to preserve the tranquility of the sleep environment.
The St. Joseph location of the Lakeland Sleep Disorder and Treatment Center opened in December of 2008 and features three beds overlooking the St. Joseph River. The Niles location, which offers two beds, evaluates close to 600 patients a year, primarily from southern Berrien County. The sleep disorder and treatment center in Niles has been in such high demand that Lakeland recently expanded its hours to better meet the needs of patients.
Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common type of sleep apnea, is estimated to affect 20% of adults in the United States, while 85% of the cases remain undiagnosed. Sleep apnea patients often suffer from excessive weight and hypertension, and may present with frequent, loud snoring, daytime fatigue or sleepiness, and gasping or choking during the night. A full sleep study goes beyond measuring oxygen levels in the patient. Sleep lab technologists also observe brain activity, capture breathing patterns through a nasal sensor, and monitor the patients as they sleep using small infrared cameras discreetly mounted in the ceiling of each patient room. All data, audio, and video are provided to the physician in a comprehensive evaluation of the patient's sleep habits.
