Specimen Required

Container

Sterile airtight plastic container with no media, preservative or fixative

Volume

Pref. Vol.: 5.0 g stool
Min. Vol.: 5.0 g stool

Collection Instructions

• Collect stool specimen in a dry, clean container (eg – collection toilet hat)
• Do not contaminate the stool specimen with urine or scoop the sample from the toilet bowl
• Transfer sufficient stool to sterile plastic container
• Label container with patient name, date of birth, date and time of collection
• Refrigerate

Transportation Instructions

• Refrigerate
• If greater than 48 hours until testing, freeze

Stability

Room temperature: Unacceptable
Refrigerated: 72 hours
Frozen: 1 month (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)

• Swabs
• Feces in transport media or preservatives

Remarks

Patient Prep:
To avoid false negative results, no antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, or a bismuth preparation should be administered to patient for 14 days prior to specimen collection
