Collection Instructions

CSF:
• Collected by lumbar, ventricular or cisternal puncture into sterile plastic tubes
• Tube numbers should correspond to sample collection order
• Culture will be performed on tube least likely to be contaminated with skin flora
• Next to last tube collected preferred

Eye:
• Scrapings collected by physician and submitted on mini-tip culture swabs in transport media
• Sterile swabs from culture collection/transport system

Genital:
• Sterile swabs from culture collection/transport system

Hair:
• Clip or pluck hair
• Place in sterile container
• A Wood's lamp is useful in the collection of specimens in tinea capitis infections, since hairs infected by most members of the genus Microsporum frequently exhibit fluorescence under a Wood's lamp. However, in tinea capitis due to Trichophyton sp., infected hairs usually do not fluoresce

Nails, Skin:
• Wash site with 70% alcohol
• Allow to dry

Tissue:
• Keep moist by wrapping in gauze and adding a small amount of sterile water or saline

Urine:
• Early morning specimen

Suspected Ringworm Cases:
• Skin scrapings should be collected at outer periphery or border of lesion

Sputum:
• Three first morning specimens submitted on three successive days recommended
