Celebrating Milestones

Birthdays are an occasion that can be greeted with varying responses. For some they are an eagerly awaited time of celebration, and for others they are a time of reflection and reminiscing. When faced with a life-limiting prognosis, birthdays can be a time that is much more treasured and held dear; a milestone to attain, with the understanding that the years ahead may be limited.

Don Worsham loves to celebrate his birthday and celebrate life. He enjoys reflecting back on his 68th birthday party that was planned in secret. The thoughtfulness that went into planning this surprise party for him, and the excitement he experienced when he learned of this party has left a lasting positive impression.

As Don was preparing for his 69th Birthday he noticed a difference. Don is now on service with Hospice at Home and facing a life-limiting prognosis. Despite his health issues, he remains positive and does all he can to enjoy every day. Knowing how much Don loved celebrating, his hospice team wanted to help him make the most of his birthday this year, and ambushed him with a surprise party at his home. When the hospice team arrived at 9:15 a.m. Don was in his driveway. They surprised him with a cake, fun hats, and birthday wishes. Don proudly showed the hospice team his garden, and then moved the party inside to include Rose, his significant other. Don’s birthday party was one full of laughs and joy. He spent much of the time reflecting back happily on his life, and expressing the pride and love that he feels for his family. Don’s enduring passion for life is an inspiration for us all to give every day meaning, and make the most of small and large milestones.
