When you or a loved one have a medical emergency, our Lakeland emergency departments are there to provide quality care quickly. Our emergency departments at Lakeland Hospital, Niles and Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph are open 24 hours a day, every day. Our board-certified physicians, registered nurses, care managers and the other members of our emergency care team are there to assist you in a medical emergency. Lakeland’s emergency departments provide care to more than 59,000 patients each year.
Our emergency services are available for the treatment of unexpected illness and injury, which may affect individuals of any age, from newborn infants to the elderly. Our staff are trained to provide treatment for serious injuries and illnesses of all types. Patients who arrive at a Lakeland emergency department are treated based on the severity of their medical needs. Patients with a serious or life-threatening illness or injury must be cared for immediately, which may mean patients with less serious conditions need to wait.
Upon their arrival at our emergency department, patients are first seen by a triage nurse who asks questions about his or her symptoms, medical history and checks vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, etc., to determine the seriousness of the patient’s condition.
The time a patient spends in the emergency department is determined by what types of tests and procedures are needed. It may take up to several hours for the physician to receive the results and determine the best treatment options and whether the patient should be admitted to the hospital or released. If released, the emergency physician may refer the patient to a physician or a specialty clinic for additional treatment.
