Standing vs. Sitting in the Workplace

by Jessica Springer | May 3, 2017

Did you know, the average adult spends nearly eight hours each day sitting? The World Health Organization now warns that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of all causes of mortality, doubling the incidence of heart disease and diabetes.

Studies show that sitting disease may be deadlier than smoking. However, you can reverse this.

Walking GroupSo why not start with a low-impact workout you can do anytime, anywhere, at no cost, and in any outfit? Start walking! Walking is an easy and effective exercise that is good for your health. It helps improve your mood, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, manage weight, reduce your risk of developing diabetes, relieve stress, and sleep better.

Try taking a break from your desk during the day and incorporating a short work into your regular routine. A new study suggests, that taking really short but frequent walks can counteract the harm caused by sitting for long periods of time. The researchers found that even just a five-minute stroll can help.

All Lakeland facilities have detailed walking maps available which takes the guess work out of your walking path and even allows you to track your distance.

Making exercise a social activity with your co-workers will help keep you motivated and stay on track with your fitness goals. You’ll be more inclined to work out if your family members and friends are by your side.

One way or another get moving – movement leads to healthy life.
