Sensory Summer Camp

by Jessica Springer | Mar 15, 2017

For most of us, attending a summer camp holds an important place in our childhood memories. Becky Rommel, OTR, Lakeland Rehabilitation, said this “rite of passage” is what sparked the idea for Lakeland Kids’ Sensory Camp.Sensory Camp

“I saw a need in our community for parents of children who have a diagnosis of autism, sensory processing disorder, or traumatic brain injuries to want their children to still be able to experience all of the joys that summer camp offers,” said Becky.

With the help of Leah Hintz, OTR, and Keri Pawielski, PT, Becky launched a six-week sensory camp that provides kids a chance to practice physical, cognitive, and social skills in a fun and active group environment. Kids who are a part of the program attend weekly one-hour sessions presented in a consistent routine to include:

  • Sensory motor exercises
  • Balance and coordination
  • Obstacle course activity
  • Socialization opportunity
  • Gross motor tasks
  • Structured stations with emphasis on transitions

Melissa Luntz of St. Joseph said her daughter Matilda has benefited greatly from the one-on-one interaction with Lakeland therapists. Melissa said the sensory camp has also helped prepare Matilda for school and she has learned to stay focused and engaged in activities, to follow instructions, and to work as a group. Sensory Camp

“I cannot emphasize how lucky we feel to work with Becky and the rest of the sensory camp staff,” said Melissa. “I feel that they are truly genuine, empathetic, and caring. It helps that they are moms, too, and understand how important it is for your child to have the necessary skills for continued growth and development.”

The 2018 sensory camp will be held during the summer months from at Power in Motion Gymnastics during the following dates and times:

June 18, 25 and July 9, 16, 23, 30

  • Ages 3-6: Mondays, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Ages 7-12: Mondays, 2:00 to 3:15 p.m.

Cost of the camp is $90 per camper, due by the first day of camp. Space is limited. Call Lakeland Rehabilitation at (269) 428-2799 to learn more.
