Comfort and Confidence - Rod Frantz

Physicians: James Maskill, DPM

After complications from a prior surgery in Florida, Rod Frantz, 84, had more than his fair share of stays in overwhelming and impersonal health systems. So, when he returned home to Benton Harbor, Michigan, for further treatment, he was pleasantly surprised by the top-notch care he received at Lakeland Hospital Watervliet.

Due to an infected toe joint, Rod made an appointment with foot and ankle specialist James Maskill, DPM. After initial consultation, it was determined that Dr. Maskill would need to amputate two of Rod’s toes in separate surgeries, to prevent the spread of infection.

Although his procedures and recovery seemed routine for Rod, his two hospital stays at Lakeland Hospital Watervliet did not.

“I think people should know what a beautiful facility [Watervliet] is,” said Rod. “What I really mean by that is the doctors and the people.”

Instead of sprawling campuses and rushed service, both the care team and the setting at Watervliet made Rod and his wife Dottie feel right at home.

“They did a good job for me,” said Rod. “Before repairing the botched toe, they explained everything. Dr. Maskill took his time, and everyone I encountered handled themselves in the best way possible.”

That level of comfort and care went beyond the providers and staff Rod met. From facilities to food, Rod said he enjoyed everything while recovering at Lakeland Hospital Watervliet. Rod and Dottie found the rooms and environment to be neat and clean. And Rod even enjoyed something notoriously unpleasant in health care: he thought the food tasted delicious.

Dottie also noticed a positive difference, as she navigated the hospital to visit Rod during his stays.

“I liked that I could walk in and find my way to his room without getting lost!” said Dottie. “Because it is a smaller facility, everything was easier and more personal.”

A few months after his procedures, Rod reflected on his experiences and said there is no comparison between the care he received in Florida and the care he received at Lakeland Hospital Watervliet. And he wants others to know.

“I would tell anybody that Dottie and I were very happy about our experience,” said Rod. “I have complete confidence in our local health system and what they have to offer patients.”
