What do you do to brighten your day? It could be the indulgence of a special sweet treat, a relaxing bath, sitting out in the sunshine, filling your home with fresh flowers, or reminiscing over old photos. We all have things that bring smiles to our faces and fill our hearts. Although these things may seem small on the surface, the impact they have on our emotional wellness goes much deeper.

There is a direct connection between finding joy in the little moments in our day and our overall satisfaction with life. Winifred “Winnie” Lant has found many a fond moment collecting jewelry. Winnie has spent her life admiring beautiful jewelry, and has an extensive collection that has accumulated over the years. As a part of her morning routine she tries on different necklaces, watches, bracelets, rings, and earrings until the perfect combination is found to match her outfit. Due to her advanced age and illness, Winnie needs help with the clasps on her necklaces and putting on her earrings. Even so, this has not stopped her from wearing her jewelry every day.

This need for additional help has afforded her a new opportunity to reminisce. When her Hospice at Home team members are lucky enough to visit before she has put on her jewelry for the day they are rewarded with the honor of helping her pick her best pieces to wear while being treated to stories about her life. Each jewelry item carries with it a different story: the places she lived, the people she spent time with, and the things she enjoyed doing. These are not just accessories or part of an outfit; Winnie’s jewelry is a link to her past, and a window into happy times throughout her life.

Once she is adorned with the perfect selections for that day Winnie always has a look of peace and happiness. The sparkle that Winnie’s jewelry gives her, both on the surface and from within, brightens the day of everyone she meets.
