Lakeland's Emergency Care
Since joining Lakeland, Emergency Physicians Medical Group (EPMG) has succeeded in re-engineering patient care in the emergency departments at Lakeland's St. Joseph and Niles hospitals. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, EPMG provides physicians, physician extenders, and management services to 50 programs in eight states, serving over 850,000 patients annually.
Twenty physicians and eight physician extenders serve the Lakeland sites. 12 of the physicians are board-certified or board eligible in emergency medicine.
Edward Lutkus, MD is the VP of Client Services and also serves as EPMG's Chairman of the Board
Bryan Staffin, DO is Medical Director for Lakeland's Emergency Department
and Michael Westfall, DO is Medical Director for Niles' Emergency Department
EPMG works with Lakeland to provide the best possible care and services. Every adjustment made is patient centered. They provide sophisticated HIPAA-compliant software to help monitor quality indicators and throughput times to achieve optimal physician quality and patient satisfaction scores. Physician performance is so important to EPMG that their compensation system is tied to performance indicators. Some physician-specific indicators:
- Patient and medical staff satisfaction
- Wait times
- Clinical quality indicators (best practice guidelines)
- X-ray and lab turnaround times
- Documentation compliance
- Follow-up calls to high-risk patients
- Admission tracking times
EPMG works with the hospital administration to improve ED service and operations. Initiatives to date include development of staffing matrices, fast-track operations, documentation systems, policy and procedure review and revision, performance monitoring, short-term and long-term planning.
