Lakeland Health has created many da Vinci masterpieces — over 2,044 cases performed to date. To better serve our patients, we recently acquired the newest model robot — the da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System, making Lakeland the only health system in Michiana with the most advanced Xi technology.
The units have been placed at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph; Lakeland Hospital, Niles; and the Center for Outpatient Services, St. Joseph, the only outpatient surgery center in the Midwest to have a surgical robot.
Dr. Benjamin Stockton, Medical Director of the Lakeland Robotics program and the only da Vinci fellowship-trained Urologist in Michiana, leads a team of 15 robotically-trained surgeons.
Lakeland Health surgeons use the da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical Systems to see inside the body more clearly and perform complex surgeries through tiny incisions. The da Vinci robot performs over 1 million safety checks per second and allows for a whole new level of safer, more complex surgical treatment. This state-of-the-art technology allows patients to receive the advanced treatment they need at Lakeland Health, without leaving our community.
Compared to conventional surgery, da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery may provide a number of benefits, including:
- Faster recovery
- Less pain
- Minimal scarring
- Reduced blood loss and need for blood transfusions
- Reduced risk of infection
- Single site incision
- Shorter hospital stays
- Smaller incisions
