Winter Slip and Fall Safety Tips
Dec 14, 2016

Winter is finally here! Because we care about your safety, it is important to keep these tips in mind in order to prevent slips and falls this winter:

  • Although your hands might be cold, don't put them in your pockets when you are walking on snow and ice. If you slip, you will need your arms to restore balance. If you fall, your arms will help you land safely.
  • Wear the proper footwear. Although it may not be glamorous to wear a pair of boots, it will give you traction, not to mention keep your feet warm. If you want to wear heels or other shoes, simply carry an extra pair with you.
  • Only walk in areas that have been shoveled and salted. Don’t try to climb over snow piles to take a shortcut. Choose your walking route carefully and make sure cars have come to a stop before you enter the crosswalk.
  • Don't carry large loads while walking on snow or ice.
  • Take small careful steps instead of large ones. When getting out of a vehicle, step, don't jump.
  • When possible, use handrails, handles—anything that will help you keep your balance. Never run on snow or ice.
  • Help elderly friends, patients, and relatives on snow and ice. Slips and falls can be extremely dangerous for pregnant women and the elderly. If you are older or pregnant, don't shy away from asking others for a helping hand.
  • Keep non-essential travel to a minimum. Always clear your headlights, taillights, and windows of snow. Give yourself extra time to safely reach your destination.
  • If you witness a fall on Lakeland’s property, please offer assistance and complete a safety opportunity report.
