Safety and convenience in and out of the hospital

Lakeland pharmacists work hard to ensure your safety, whether you’re staying in the hospital or filling a prescription at the Pharmacy Shoppe. As a part of your care team, pharmacists ensure that the medications you take will help you to be healthy.

The pharmacy offers comprehensive prescription services and a wide range of products, including diabetic supplies and a variety of health-related and hygiene items.

Filling and Transferring Prescriptions

To have a prescription filled:

  • Bring the written order for a new medication provided by your physician to the Lakeland Pharmacy Shoppe

       Or

  • Have your physician’s office send the order directly to the pharmacy. Telephone orders for new prescriptions are accepted only from a physician’s office.

To have a prescription transferred from another pharmacy:

  • Bring information on the current prescription, name of pharmacy, prescription number and medication name, to the Lakeland Pharmacy Shoppe

       Or

  • Call the Lakeland Pharmacy Shoppe at 269.556.2888 and provide information on the current prescription, name of pharmacy, prescription number, and medication name.

Medication Storage

In order to work best, medications must be stored in the proper environment. Check your medication for special instructions, such as refrigeration, and use these general guidelines:

  • Place medications in a cool, dry place; out of direct sunlight is best
  • Keep medication out of areas of high humidity (Generally, bathroom medicine cabinets are not a good place for medications)
  • Avoid storing medications where they can be confused with other medications, vitamins, or food
  • Do not leave medications in places that can be accessed by children or pets
  • Always leave medications in their original containers with the labels from the pharmacy intact

Prevent Drug Interactions

To guard against potential problems with your medications, it is important to make sure your physician and pharmacist know about all of the drugs you take, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements. Remember to let your physician know of any allergies you have. It is best to fill all of your prescriptions at one pharmacy, so that your pharmacist can monitor all of your medications and prevent negative drug interactions.

Medication Safety Cards

Lakeland provides free medication safety cards to the community. By keeping all of your vital information in one place, the medication safety card will help you receive fast and accurate care, whether you’re at your physician’s office, hospital, or pharmacy.

Here’s how it works:

  • Write down all the medications you are taking in pencil, including prescriptions, vitamins, supplements, over-the-counter and herbal medications.
  • List your allergies and sensitivities, along with your body’s reaction to them.
  • Complete the fields with contact information for your physician and a family member or friend who can serve as an emergency contact.
  • Carry the medication safety card, along with your medical and insurance cards, in your wallet or purse.
  • Remember to record any changes in your medications and dosages on the card.

Medication safety cards are available at all Spectrum Health Lakeland facilities, or you may request one by calling 866.260.7544 or by filling out our request form.
