Cuddle Cot Devices Now Available at Lakeland BirthPlace
Mar 7, 2017
The BirthPlace in Niles and St. Joseph recently made Cuddle Cot devices available to patients and families who have experienced the birth of a stillborn baby. The Cuddle Cot is a cooling device that helps preserve a stillborn baby’s body in a bassinet or crib, allowing the baby to remain in the hospital room with the family for a longer period of time. This can provide comfort and help with the grieving process.
“Coping with the death of a baby can be particularly difficult because the length of time spent with the infant may be far less than desired,” said Lisa Bartoszek, Director of Bereavement and Lory's Place. “The intention of the Cuddle Cot is to allow time for special connection and memory making, which is meaningful and will be deeply appreciated by those who use this innovative gift.”
The Cuddle Cot device at the BirthPlace in St. Joseph was purchased with funds donated by Lakeland team member Elizebeth Wedde and her friends and family.
Elizebeth lost her son Caleb last April. While home recuperating she learned about the Cuddle Cot, was intrigued, and did extensive research. “I wish we would have had a Cuddle Cot available to us when we lost Caleb – it would have really helped our family during a difficult time,” said Elizebeth. “As a nurse I work on the cardiac floor, and we see life and death all of the time. I wanted to help make it easier for others parents and families going through the same experience.”
Lory’s Place, a grief healing and education center of Caring Circle, offers educational resources and support for those who have been affected by the death of a baby. For additional information please call (269) 983-2707 or (800) 717-3812 or visit www.lorysplace.org
