On Saturday, August 5, Lakeland Hospital, Niles, competed in the annual Dragon Boat Race along the St. Joseph river in Niles, MI. The race began at the Main Street Bridge and ended north of the Riverfront Park boat dock. A total of eight teams competed in three rounds, for first place. Crossing the finish line, 1.5 seconds after Niles Dental, Lakeland Hospital, Niles took home second place.

The team was made up of 21 Lakeland team members. “Last year we took 7th place so the team was super psyched to take 2nd this year,” said Cathy McNeil, Administrative Secretary. To achieve more speed, the team had a strategy to work together as one. They also made the boat lighter by deciding not to have a drummer. Everyone took turns paddling throughout the rounds, giving the entire team a chance to participate.

By competing in the Dragon Boat Race, Lakeland Hospital, Niles portrayed an excellent example of our TRAITS and what it means to use teamwork. They also showed the value and positivity of being involved in the community. “I like getting the chance to meet people that I don’t normally see around the hospital,” said Gregory Harte, Radiologic Technologist. “It was a fun experience to bring us together as a team.”
