Lakeland Recognized Nationally for Medical Excellence, Patient Experience
Nov 13, 2017

(ST. JOSEPH) – Lakeland Health has been named among the top 10 percent of the nation’s hospitals for medical excellence in cancer care, orthopedics, neurosciences, and general surgery by CareChex® — an information service of Quantros, Inc. Lakeland Hospital, Watervliet was also ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for patient satisfaction. CareChex is an innovative medical quality rating system designed to assist hospitals and health systems in improving the quality of inpatient care and promoting medical excellence to consumers, payers, and employers.

This medical excellence award is an overall measure of quality for the hospital or health system and encompasses performance across patient safety indicators (PSIs), and inpatient quality indicators (IQIs), as well as measures of mortality, complications, and 30-day readmission rates. The patient satisfaction award is based on responses to the HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) patient satisfaction survey. The survey includes the following nine (9) categories: overall hospital rating (scale of 1 to 10), doctor communication, nurse communication, staff responsiveness, medication explanation, pain control, hospital environment (quietness and cleanliness), post‐discharge instructions, and care transition.

“We are committed to attaining high standards of quality care. Independent quality evaluations conducted by CareChex demonstrate we are achieving our goal,” said Loren B. Hamel, MD, President and CEO. “Providing excellent care is only possible with our outstanding physicians, team members, and volunteers. We are extremely grateful for their ability to care for patients in such an exceptional manner.”

“CareChex allows the public to make informed decisions regarding the quality of medical care provided by Lakeland Health,” said Andy Weissberg, SVP Marketing Communications at Quantros. “We are pleased to acknowledge Lakeland has achieved an exceptionally high level of performance for medical excellence in a number of different clinical categories. Their performance is a benchmark other health systems should seek to emulate.”
