Our Approach to the Facelift

Although you might not notice it, you most likely use your face for many different ways of communicating. It’s usually the first thing you see when you meet someone, so it can be uncomfortable when it feels like your signs of aging represent you. We understand that everyone deserves to look and feel like the best version of themselves, so we take a natural, light-handed approach to facial rejuvenation that produces excellent results and even greater confidence.

What is a Facelift?

The facelift, also called the rhytidectomy, is one of the best techniques for facial rejuvenation. It can effectively lift and tighten the skin and tissues of the midface, where signs of aging most commonly occur. Areas like the nasolabial folds or cheeks can be subject to volume loss over time as a normal part of aging, which can cause wrinkles and folds to form with loose skin. Although the facelift can have a reputation for producing ‘frozen’ or ‘wind-blown’ results, modern facelift techniques have come a long way and can produce very natural and subtle results when it comes to removing decades from the facial profile.

Can a Facelift Benefit Me?

As with any plastic surgery procedure, patients should be in good health and able to undergo surgery. However, there is no objective number when it comes to the age at which patients can opt for a facelift. This is because everyone ages differently, and your signs of aging are unique to your profile and anatomy. It’s important to understand that a facelift can produce a younger, more rejuvenated version of yourself, so you should be sure to discuss your goals and hopes for this procedure during your consultation. Your facelift procedure can be combined with many other treatments to enhance your results, so our experts can recommend a treatment plan that benefits you best.

What Should I Know About the Facelift?

Facelift incisions are able to be concealed within the natural hairline and the folds behind the ears. However, there are a few different incisions that can be used, depending on goals and signs of aging.

Traditional Incision

This type of incision is the standard for traditional facelifts because it allows the most effective lifting and rejuvenation without being highly visible. It follows the temple and goes around the ear where it ends within the hairline at the nape of the neck.

Mini Incision

Sometimes called the mini facelift, this incision allows for minor rejuvenation for early signs of aging. It requires a much smaller incision that begins at the temple hairline and follows the ear. This technique can produce subtle rejuvenation versus a traditional method.

In addition to your facelift procedure, a neck lift or brow lift can be performed for further facial rejuvenation, since a facelift cannot correct these areas on its own.

Your Facelift Procedure

We can perform your facelift procedure at our private, accredited facility in St. Joseph. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, which is administered once you’re comfortable. Then, a predetermined incision is performed that allows access to the underlying tissues of the face. Once the skin is lifted and the underlying fat is removed or rearranged for an improved contour. Loose muscles can be tightened using sutures, restoring them to an upright position. Once this is accomplished, the skin is lifted into a tighter position and any excess is trimmed away. The incisions are then closed with sutures. Overall, this process takes around two to three hours, depending on how extensive your procedure is.

What Can I Expect After a Facelift?

Most patients require a few weeks of downtime and recovery from a facelift procedure, although many do not feel comfortable returning to public for a few additional weeks due to swelling or bruising. It’s important to follow any post-operative instructions, including avoiding using cosmetics or skincare products for your recovery period. You can manage any pain or discomfort with prescribed medications. It’s normal for your face to feel tight or stretched during this time since your skin will accommodate the new contours over the course of your recovery. We can recommend the best in scar management systems for use during your recovery period to ensure that you don’t need to worry about visible scarring.
