Hearts Hard at Work

Hospice at Home and Lakeland Health are continually blessed by team members with big hearts; hearts they bring to work with them every day. The following are just two examples of the moments made possible by your support.

On the Saturday evening following Thanksgiving, a resident came to the Hanson Hospice Center while his wife stayed at Pine Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family worried that the wife, Mrs. Rice, would not feel well enough to join her husband at the Hanson Hospice Center, and a call was made to check on her condition. Pine Ridge nurse Dawn Cook was instrumental in helping her over to the Hanson Hospice Center at 1:30 a.m. Mrs. Rice was excited and grateful to be able to spend the night with her husband. He passed away the next day.

When presented with this opportunity, Dawn did not hesitate for a moment to take action and make sure the resident and his wife could be together. When asked for her help, she simply responded "absolutely we can do that – I'll bring her myself."

Later that evening, a 10 year-old-child came to the Hanson Hospice Center. Ruby, the night nurse, was already busy caring for Mr. and Mrs. Rice. It was determined that extra help, and extra hands, were needed.

Heather Schoonveld, a Hospice nurse, had just arrived home from her Thanksgiving travels. She came in to the Hanson Hospice Center at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night to work on getting the young guest settled, and stayed well after 2:30 a.m. to help out however she could.

Both caregivers that night demonstrated kindness and dedication to the people they serve. Thank you for ensuring these services are available to our community, and that life's important moments like these are possible.
