Be Safety-Smart This Winter

by Jessica Springer | Jan 21, 2016

kids-sleddingAs the arrival of the first snowstorms usher in the onset of winter, the time to prepare for new seasonal sports is upon us. From skis and skates to sleds and snowmobiles, families everywhere are equipping themselves with the recreational tools needed to greet the winter weather. But before you and your kids hit the slopes, remember that each seasonally specific outdoor activity comes with its own set of safety hazards. Keep your family playtime accident-free by adhering to the following winter-wise tips:

Check your equipment. Before using recreational equipment such as skis and snowboards to cruise the slopes, make sure to have them fitted and inspected by a professional. Improperly sized boots and poorly fitted gear can easily lead to dangerous falls.

Assess your skills. As with all skills, mastery in winter sports comes from the right combination of practice and supervision. Don’t let your eagerness to excel cause you to jump ahead of your ability level as you engage in winter sports. Only move to steeper slopes and faster speeds after practicing with your equipment to gradually build your skills.

Adhere to safety instructions. Recreational facilities implement rules with your well-being in mind, so be sure not to ignore them. Obey all signposts, stay on marked paths, and learn how to use your equipment properly.

Remain alert. Accidents and injuries can happen anywhere and at any time, so make sure to use caution as you play outdoors in the wintertime. Avoid frozen lakes and ponds, wear helmets, and scope out your environment for hidden rocks and tree stumps. Children who sled should refrain from riding with more than one person at a time per sled, as the weight of multiple riders reduces the sledders’ ability to steer.

With all the exciting recreational possibilities brought on by winter weather, kids often disregard the measures they must take to stay warm and dry while outside. It’s important to remember that layering is key. As a parent, you can protect your children from low-temperature health hazards by clothing them in the following attire:

  • Thermal long johns
  • Turtlenecks
  • Multiple shirts
  • Thick pants
  • Sweaters
  • Heavy coats
  • Thermal socks
  • Sturdy boots
  • Gloves or mittens
  • Winter hats
