Fitness Designed with You in Mind
A workout a day help keeps the doctor away. This has been Eleanor Dorow’s philosophy for the past 17 years after she hurt her back while shoveling her mother’s driveway one winter.
“I visited the chiropractor to help with the pain that did not seem to help. My doctor recommended I try the medical fitness program offered through Lakeland Rehabilitation Services – I’ve been going faithfully every day since,” said Eleanor.
The medical fitness program is designed primarily for individuals with medical risk factors due to injury, illness, disease, disability, or age. Specially-trained exercise specialists utilize an individual’s unique medical profile to design a safe, supervised fitness program to achieve optimal health.
“My exercise specialist, Emily, meets with me monthly to discuss my progress and introduce new exercises into my routine,” said Eleanor. “It also helps knowing there is someone there to answer my questions. If something were to go wrong while I was working out, I would have help immediately. You don’t get that kind of personalized attention in a gym.”
A number of years had passed since her original fall and Eleanor began experiencing pain in her hip as a result of arthritis in the joint. After deciding to undergo surgery, she was pleased to learn that her hard work had paid off.
“My physician couldn’t believe what great shape I was in and reassured me that I would have no trouble recovering from the procedure,” she said.
After completing physical therapy Eleanor returned to working out each morning. She experienced no pain in her hip and was able to begin taking golf lessons again. She also continues to referee high school volleyball games.
“If I don’t workout I miss it,” said Eleanor. “There are a number of the same people who have been going since I started, and you really start to build a sense of community.”
To this day Eleanor is proud to say that she doesn’t take any medications and feels stronger than ever both physically and mentally.
“The exercise specialists take you where you are and make you feel confident about your abilities,” she said. “It doesn’t happen overnight but if you’re faithful and committed to it, you’ll see the results.”
