Weight Loss Surgery Gives Patient New Outlook on Life Share
Jeremy Arnett

Mar, 2015

Physicians: Michael Schuhknecht, DO

When Jeremy Arnett’s mom was diagnosed and later died from cancer, it served as a wakeup call that he needed to get his health back on track if he wanted to live a long, happy life.

Jeremy, 43, a South Bend resident, knew that his weight contributed to a number of health issues in his life including high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

After talking with a few of his coworkers who had undergone weight loss treatment, Jeremy decided to pursue the expertise of Michael Schuhknecht, DO, and the staff at the Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center in Niles, Michigan.

“I wasn’t happy with my weight and I was tired of taking so many medications for the health issues it caused,” said Jeremy. “I knew I needed to make a change.”

In May of 2014, after discussing his options with Dr. Schuhknecht, Jeremy decided to undergo a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. During this procedure, a small part of the stomach is used to create a new stomach pouch, about the size of an egg, causing food to bypass part of the small intestine. Patients who undergo this type of surgery feel full more quickly and experience a reduction in the amount of food they are able to eat at one time.

“I traveled to Lakeland for my weight loss surgery because I wanted the best,” said Jeremy. “I did a lot of research and talked to my coworkers and knew that Dr. Schuhknecht was the right choice for me. In my opinion, he is a leader in the industry for this type of procedure.”

“I can’t praise the staff at the Weight Loss Center enough – they were all very well-versed in their fields but still took the time to listen to my concerns,” he said. “They answered most of my questions before I even had the chance to ask them.”

Since his surgery, Jeremy has lost a total of 100 pounds and has stopped taking nearly all of the medications he was on for his previous health issues.

As a semi truck driver, Jeremy spends many hours on the road, which can be challenging at times to stay on track. With the help of Katelyn Dinkgrave, Clinical Dietician, Jeremy said he has learned how to read labels and make healthy food choices as well as control his portion sizes.

“I feel much more confident in my overall health and longevity,” he said. “My first grandchild was recently born and I am looking forward to watching him grow up for many years to come.”

Jeremy continues to meet regularly with Dr. Schuhknecht and Katelyn. He also participates in a support groups offered by the clinic that provides an encouraging environment for patients in similar health situations to share resources and personal weight loss experiences.
