Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is considered the “gold” standard and recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the treatment of severe obesity. This operation is typically performed laparoscopically using the da Vinci® Surgical System. It combines gastric restriction with malabsorption of nutrients.

During a gastric bypass procedure, the stomach is divided to form a new, smaller pouch for food. The small bowel is re-routed to empty the new, smaller pouch. As food enters the pouch, it quickly fills and causes the patient to have a sensation of fullness after eating only a small portion of food. The remainder of the stomach is present, but no longer acts as a reservoir for food.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is one of the most frequently performed weight loss surgeries in the U.S. with 70-80% of excess weight loss after five years. Additionally, 96% of certain associated health conditions or co-morbidities (sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and diabetes) are typically improved or resolved following the surgery.

Benefits of this surgery include:

  • Elimination of prescription drugs
  • Increased activity, stamina, and energy levels
  • Improved eating habits
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Less emotional eating
  • Reduction in obstructive sleep apnea
  • Relief from chronic joint pain
  • Resolution of diabetes
  • Significant weight loss
