Peripheral and Carotid Procedures

Image of stent placement in vascular systemPeripheral Angiogram: During a peripheral angiogram, doctors insert a long, thin, flexible tube called a catheter, into the body. The catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and is guided toward the lower body. The procedure allows doctors to study how well the blood vessels carry blood to your lower body and legs.

Peripheral Angioplasty: Peripheral angioplasty is a procedure that helps open blockages in peripheral arteries. These vessels carry blood to your lower body and legs. Angioplasty may allow your blood to flow better. This can help prevent severe leg pain and cramping.

Peripheral Stent: A stent is a small metal or mesh tube. It is used to help keep your artery open. If you need a stent, your doctor will place it in your artery during angioplasty. He fits the stent over a balloon. The balloon and stent then slide through the catheter to the area where the blockage is and the balloon is then inflated. This presses the stent against the artery wall. The balloon is removed and the stent stays in place.

Carotid Angiogram: During a carotid angiogram, doctors insert a long, thin, flexible tube called a catheter, into the body. The catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and is guided toward the neck. The procedure allows doctors to study how well the blood vessels carry blood to your brain.

Carotid Stent: A stent is a small metal or mesh tube.

Renal Angiogram: During a renal angiogram, doctors insert a long, thin, flexible tube called a catheter, into the body. The catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and is guided to the kidneys. The procedure allows doctors to study how well the blood vessels carry blood to your kidneys.
