Blessed to Give

by Loren Hamel, MD -- President & CEO, Lakeland Health | Dec 20, 2017

It’s been said that it’s more blessed to give than to receive. I certainly hope that is true for a dear member of our community, Kurt Schnese.

He has a deep passion for giving.

Kurt moved back to this area, where he grew up, after completing a very successful career in Texas as an interior designer for high-end clientele.

We introduced the Lakeland family to Kurt as he conceived of a plan to leave his estate to Lakeland in honor of his parents. They lived in our community and both received care from Lakeland on many occasions. His mother had a serious stroke and his father passed away a few years ago after a battle with cancer.

If you recall, Kurt’s plan was unique. First, he wanted to make that gift while he is still with us. And second, he wants to arrange the details of that gift himself.

For Kurt, it’s the best way to honor his parents. It’s the best way for him to make sure it’s done right. It’s the best way for him to enjoy it. And it’s the best way for him to inspire others to be generous with their own resources.

He certainly inspired the Foundation Board. We heard his creative and detailed plans last week. He has catalogued more than 4,000 valuable items, including furniture, furnishings, art, crystal, and various other collectibles. Kurt has already arranged for appraisals, auctioneers, a venue, food, entertainment, and promotion for his estate sale. The event is scheduled for mid-May 2018, and will be held in the Heritage Center in St. Joseph.

He hopes his efforts and careful preparation will allow 100 percent of the proceeds of his estate sale to benefit Lakeland and bless our community. If that is not impressive enough, Kurt is making all these detailed plans while he fights his own battle with cancer.

During this season of giving, it is likely that we will hear many heartfelt stories of generosity. Hopefully you and I can find our own opportunities to do something generous, no matter how big or small.

Lakeland is fortunate to receive several million dollars of philanthropic support from our community each year, but the support from Kurt will be special. His gifts, all 4,000 of them, will rank among the most heartfelt.
