(ST. JOSEPH) – Patients at Stonegate Plastic Surgery, a Lakeland Health Affiliate, now have access to a new fat reduction treatment option. CoolSculpting® – a process by which cold metal panels applied to the surface of the skin to freeze away fat cells – was initially approved by the FDA in 2010 for reducing fat in the abdomen and in 2014 for thighs.
During the process a suction applicator is placed on the targeted area, pulling the skin between cooling panels. Cold is gradually introduced to the area with the aim of freezing underlying fat cells. Once the treated fat cells are crystallized, or frozen, they die and are naturally eliminated from the body for good.
