Lakeland Leadership Program Graduates Second Cohort

(ST. JOSEPH) – “Leading Toward the Future,” a leadership development program at Lakeland Health, recently graduated its second cohort of Lakeland team members.

“Associates’ commitment to this program underscores their passion for making Lakeland a better place to work and a better place to receive healthcare,” said Loren B. Hamel, MD, President and CEO, Lakeland Health. “The graduates of this program are an inspiration to all of us. I look forward to the ways their leadership commitment will benefit and bless us all.”

For the past year and a half, fifteen Lakeland team members dedicated over 1,000 hours to complete the intensive, in-depth Leading Toward the Future program. The program develops leadership skills and characteristics, such as collaboration, emotional intelligence, crucial conversations, and resilience to change, among others.  Participants included leaders with years of experience, new leaders, and associates with aspirations to become leaders in the future.

Within Leading Toward the Future, participants completed a 360-survey process, met with members of Lakeland’s Senior Leadership Team, experienced hands-on simulations, and attended Lead Michiana, where they heard presentations from esteemed leaders across the country.  Participants also identified an Action Learning Project, and made presentations about their project at the final class. In order to complete the program, graduates will teach segments of leadership classes to the program’s next cohort.

This ongoing leadership program is presented by Lakeland University, a corporate university within Lakeland Health that develops and delivers educational programs for growing clinical, management, and leadership capabilities in Lakeland associates.  

“I am so proud of each associate who graduated from this cohort of the program,” said Sandi Plank, Director of Lakeland University. “I was very impressed with the projects completed by this group and the enthusiasm generated as they presented. I predict great things from each of them as they journey with Lakeland into the future of health care.”

“This cohort has shown amazing growth and change throughout the program,” said Gwen Day, Manager, Organization Development, Lakeland University. “Each person has an amazing story about how the program has changed them as individuals, but also how the program has impacted the way they work, how their team functions, and Lakeland as whole.”
