Lakeland Specialty Hospital takes a holistic approach to meeting the special needs of our wound care patients. Our individualized programs combine continuous high-quality nursing care, an interdisciplinary team approach, continuous nutritional assessment, and state-of-the-art technology and treatments. The plan of care for many of these patients involves primary wound treatment, as well as treatment of secondary problems, including generalized weakness, infections or nutritional problems. We provide care of the highest quality within a delivery system designed for optimum patient care, recovery and safety.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Lakeland Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine offers Berrien County's only hyperbaric oxygen therapy services as part of its line of advanced treatment options for wound care. Patients who receive this treatment are administered pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber to improve or correct conditions.

Benefits of using hyperbaric oxygen therapy as part of wound care include:

  • Promotion of new blood vessels
  • Decreased swelling and inflammation
  • Increased ability to fight infection
  • Reduction of toxins and metabolic waste
  • Improved rate of healing

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat a wide range of conditions, with new applications being researched on a continual basis. Currently, most insurers cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the following conditions:

  • Diabetic wounds
  • Osteoradionecrosis (radiation tissue damage)
  • Refractory osteomyelitis
  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Thermal burns
  • Crush injuries, compartment syndrome and other acute traumatic ischemias
  • Clostridial myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
  • Actinomycosis
