Pain-Free and Blessed - Greg Scott

Nov, 2015

Physicians: Devin Gamundoy, DO; John Howard, MD

Greg Scott – a 63-year-old cancer survivor – was in a state of constant pain. As a resident of South Bend, Indiana, Greg looked to his local physicians for relief. As his pain grew worse, it became difficult for him to even walk.

Interested in a second opinion, Greg asked for a referral, and was directed to the Lakeland Family Medicine, Niles office of John Howard, MD in the Longmeadow Medical Suites. There he met with one of Dr. Howard’s residents – Devin Gamundoy, DO.

Due to the youth of Dr. Gamundoy, Greg was unsure if he would receive the care he needed. In truth, it was not until after Greg talked with Dr. Gamundoy that he learned residents were physicians in their own right.

Resident physicians are doctors who are completing their medical training in a chosen specialty. They are responsible for direct patient care while working in collaboration with an attending physician. These additional physicians provide the medical knowledge and coverage to offer same-day appointments.

Any concerns Greg may have had were quickly dismissed, however, as he described the appointment as “the best experience I’ve ever had.” According to Greg, Dr. Gamundoy took the time to listen and find a solution to help with the pain. Their first meeting together lasted an hour and a half, and Greg was thrilled to have a physician who was truly there to help.

Now, Greg’s pain is under control, and each day seems more manageable. “I can go out,” he said, “not just lay in bed.” He insisted that he will “never go to another doctor.”

Greg admitted that he first thought a student out of medical school would be eager to try new methods or wouldn’t have the patience to help him. But instead he said that Dr. Gamundoy reminded him of his first physician, with care and attention to detail. “[Dr. Gamundoy] is as good as any doctor who’s been practicing for 40 years,” he said.

Two months ago, his granddaughter was born, giving him something to fight for. And according to him, Dr. Gamundoy gave him hope that he could win that fight. In the last few weeks, Greg attended a family reunion, and happily reported that he enjoyed himself.

On top of his positive experience with Dr. Gamundoy, Greg was also impressed with the location of Lakeland Family Medicine, Niles. Driving from South Bend, he found the Longmeadow Medical Suites conveniently nearer than he had expected. It wasn’t until after his appointment that Greg realized he had crossed the border into Michigan.

This entire experience has left Greg feeling “blessed.” He has already referred someone from his church, and he recommends Lakeland Health to all of his friends. Greg said that when it comes to healthcare, “it’s all about me.” But lately he hadn’t felt that way. “Dr. Gamundoy gave that back to me.” In his words, “meeting with Dr. Gamundoy was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
