Niles Birthplace Competes in Tough Mudder Half
Sep 13, 2017

When you look around the hospital, it never takes long to find the true meaning of teamwork. The Birthplace at Lakeland Hospital, Niles is no exception. Not only do they display teamwork while at work, they show it equally in how hard they can play outside of the workplace. Two weeks ago, they demonstrated their abilities while competing in their first Tough Mudder Half competition in Rockford, Illinois.

The Tough Mudder consisted of a five-mile course and 13 obstacles, which included walking through mud, low crawling through mud under barbed wire, climbing over walls, and running up a 15-foot wall. For the past four years, the Birthplace has had a running group off and on. They’ve competed in multiple 5 and 10 K’s, a mud run and even a half marathon last year. This year, the “We Deliver” team was made up of six nurses, two doctors, and one sibling.

The Birthplace team decided that they were up for a new challenge and signed up for the Tough Mudder Half in January. It was going to be a new and exciting team building experience. Nothing says teamwork like rolling around in the mud, carrying each other on your back, encouraging one another, and conquering fears. However, Tough Mudder was much larger than just themselves. It was about helping other teams get through the course as well. Although they returned home a little sore and with some bumps and bruises, the first question was, “When is the next one?” They are truly a team that does not quit.
