The American Health Information Management Association has deemed April as Privacy and Security Month.
Just as our patients trust Lakeland to provide excellent and compassionate care, they trust that we will also safeguard their medical and financial information. In today’s high tech world, the task of safeguarding that information is becoming increasingly more complex and requires all of our attention. It’s important all team members have a basic understanding of some of the common risks to our information as well as some of the threats that we face every day.
A common tactic of hackers is to send you an email that looks like it came from Lakeland or another trusted sender. In that email, they will try to trick you into providing your password or other sensitive information. It’s important that you keep an eye on your inbox for emails that looks out of the ordinary. If the email looks suspicious, do not click on any links and delete it right away.
Patient information should only be sent to and from Lakeland email accounts. A team member who sends patient information to or from a personal email account puts that information at risk to be stolen by a hacker.
Team members posting patient information (photos, videos, or written documentation) to social media violates that patient’s privacy.
Being mindful of these simple things while you care for our patients will go a long way toward protecting their information. If you have any questions, contact Robin Sarkar, PhD, Chief Information Officer. If you need to report an issue, please contact the IT Service Desk at (269) 428-2005
