Emergency Medicine Residency Program Earns New Accreditation
May 23, 2016

(ST. JOSEPH) – The emergency medicine residency program at Lakeland Health recently became one of five emergency medicine programs in the nation to become accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The new accreditation allows the program to attract and train allopathic physicians (MD) in addition to osteopathic physicians (DO).

“This accreditation puts us at the forefront of residency programs throughout the nation,” said Michelino Mancini, DO, Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director and Director of Medical Education. “This is a huge accomplishment that will provide more opportunities for medical students throughout the country to continue their medical education at Lakeland.”

All Lakeland Health residency programs are accredited through the American Osteopathic Association, with the emergency medicine program being the first to earn ACGME accredited status. In the future, the ACGME will become the only accrediting body for graduate medical education.

This year marks the second class of graduating residents in emergency medicine, family medicine, and dermatology, and the third class of graduating internal medicine residents. Between the 2015 class of 14 graduates and the 2014 class of four graduates, nine of these physicians chose to continue practicing medicine in southwest Michigan after completing their residencies.

“Lakeland is honored to play a critical role in shaping future doctors,” said Loren B. Hamel, MD, President and CEO, Lakeland Health. “As this program continues to grow, patients can expect the best talent, knowledge, and medical techniques from our physician team.”
