Coordinated School Health

K-12 School-Based Health

The Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) promotes optimal cognitive, educational, emotional, physical, and social development in youth through the creation and execution of school-focused activities, services, and strategies.

The CSHP operates according to the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model developed by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Using this model, community members, educators, families, and policymakers collaborate to address health in schools – working to align public health and education to put into action a whole child approach to education.

When working with area schools, the Population Health team focuses on community involvement, family engagement, health education, and social and emotional climates. These efforts are intended to help parents and school faculty and staff better understand the relationship between academic achievement and health, including the impacts of negative health behaviors and trauma on a child’s health and development.

The CSHP was developed to serve as a health care resource for parents and school faculty and staff to improve the health of area youth by identifying students’ priority health needs and providing them with resources to address those needs. The Population Health team works to increase engagement among students, their parents, and teachers, to ensure that all children are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
