An elderly woman recently stayed with us for several months in the Hummingbird wing of the
Hanson Hospice Center. She was in a room where she had a view of her son’s home from the window. This woman, so funny and full of life until the very end, had a devoted husband who would visit every day.
After her death, her husband was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It was constricting his esophagus and because of his age and the advanced stage of his disease, there were limited treatment possibilities. He was at peace about his decision to have his family contact the Hanson Hospice Center. He had been very happy with the care his wife had received, and was more than ready to be with us himself.
Special things happen at Hanson Hospice every day and this was no exception. It so happened a Hummingbird Room was available, the very room where his beloved wife had stayed, and this gentleman happily, and peacefully, moved in. He died a week later surrounded by his loving family.
The entire family was so moved and grateful for the care their parents received, that one of their daughters, a retired social worker, started the conversation about becoming a volunteer.
