Abdominal girth is the measurement of the distance around the abdomen at a specific point. Measurement is most often made at the level of the belly button (navel). Your body shape changes naturally as you age. Some of these changes cannot be avoided, but your lifestyle choices may slow or speed the process. The human body is made up of fat, lean tissue (muscles and organs), bones, and water. After age 30, the people tend to lose lean tissue. Your muscles, liver, kidney, and other organs may lose some of their cells. This process of muscle loss is called atrophy. Bones may lose some of their minerals and become less dense (a condition called osteopenia, or at its laterstage, osteoporosis).
Your hair and nails function to protect your body. They also keep the temperature of your body steady. Another important function of the hair and nails is to help you (sense) feel things. Some organ systems have their own internal control systems along with, or instead of, hormones. As we age, changes naturally occur in the way that body systems are controlled.
Your immune system helps protect your body from foreign or harmful substances. Examples are bacteria, viruses, toxins, cancer cells, and blood or tissues from another person. The immune system makes cells and something call antibodies that destroy these harmful substances.
