Athletic Training
Lakeland is committed to bringing the best possible care for sports-related injuries and working to prevent those injuries. Lakeland Orthopedic Physical Therapy and the Lakeland Rehabilitation Center in Niles currently have six certified athletic trainers (ATCs) who deal specifically in caring for and preventing sports-related injuries. They work with area high schools during football, soccer, basketball and volleyball games. Other sports, including golf, running, and a program tailored specifically to baseball pitchers, are also becoming an integral part of the program. Lakeland's certified athletic trainers cover the teams' practices and games, providing triage for common injuries, such as sprained ankles, stretched ligaments and injured shoulders, as well as working to prevent those injuries by taping, bracing and conditioning. certified athletic trainers will also often refer student athletes to their primary-care physician or an orthopedist, depending on the nature of the injury.
All of Lakeland's athletic trainers are certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, and some are dual certified in other allied health care professions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health care profession and recommends that certified athletic trainers be available in every high school.
For more information on the athletic training program, please contact Lakeland Orthopedic Physical Therapy, HPMS at 269-556-7150, or Lakeland Rehabilitation Services, Niles (YMCA) at 269-683-6800.
Fit ‘fore’ Golf–A Fitness Program for Golfers
No matter what clubs you select, no matter which ball you choose, it takes flexibility, strength and balance to play well. Lakeland’s Fit "fore" Golf Performance program helps golfers improve the mechanics of their game while helping to prevent injuries. Participants start with a physical evaluation and a conditioning program that concentrates on the fundamentals. Fit "fore" Golf is offered by Lakeland Orthopedic Physical Therapy, the therapy provider for the Western Amateur Golf Championship.
Based on the initial comprehensive evaluation, the golfer will receive an individual golf training program tailored to meet his or her specific needs. Typically, the program lasts six weeks, with two or three sessions per week. Each session consists of a 30-minute stretching segment and a 45- to 60-minute exercise segment. The goals of the program are:
- To improve the golfer’s ability to make a full turn without restriction
- To improve the golfer’s stability and balance through strengthening
- To improve the golfer’s “muscle memory” for a consistent swing by training on a “swing trainer”
- To build the endurance necessary for 18 or more holes of golf
- To help prevent golf-related back and other injuries by developing a stabilized swing and a strong flexible trunk.
