In 2014, individuals from the Niles-Buchanan YMCA and Lakeland Health Foundations boards came together to present one vision - to host a fundraising event that would provide the means to help cancer patients locally. From the beginning, many individuals shared personal heartfelt stories of loved ones diagnosed with cancer - from detection to recovery.
The proceeds from this initiative support the LIVESTRONG® program at the YMCA program and cancer support services at the Marie Yeager Cancer Center of Lakeland, funded through the Lakeland Health Foundations, offering a continuum of care to thousands of patients and families recovering from cancer, those fighting cancer, and those at risk - regardless of ability to pay.
The 12-week LIVESTRONG® program through the YMCA provides a “small group” exercise program designed for adult cancer survivors focused on improving physical, mental, and social health. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem. The Marie Yeager Cancer Center of Lakeland provides a centralized location for cancer care services, including screenings, treatment and follow up care, garments, wigs and transportation.
It is because of the importance of these programs that the Board of Directors of the YMCA and Lakeland Health Foundations have continued to endorse Hope Grows and have given support and oversight to ensure the success of this event.
