Our History

In 1984 Jeff Edmunds, Dr. Betty Koshy, Jim Murphy, Bob Starks, and Joe Wasserman started the Lakeland Health Foundation for fundraising of future projects.  Seven million dollars was raised in the Foundation’s first seven years. 

By 2009, the Foundations had distributed over $25 Million in gifts to improve and enhance medical care to thousands of patients through the following projects:

  • Center for Outpatient Services, St. Joseph
  • Frederick S. Upton Education Center
  • Lakeland Continuing Care Center, Lincoln Township Campus
  • Lakeland Rehabilitation Services, Niles, located at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA
  • Patient Addition, Lakeland regional Medical Center, St. Joseph
  • Scholarships and grants totaling more than $1 Million to Lakeland associates for education and skills training in nursing and Allied Health skills.

By 2010, over $322,000 contributed toward Community Outreach Services through:

  • Activ8 Kids!:  Berrien County’s childhood obesity program
  • Community Health Resource Libraries
  • County-wide diabetes education
  • Heart safe assessment and education
  • Rehabilitation Services

By 2011, over $300,000 contributed toward technology and equipment:

  • Breast MRI
  • Heart Center EKG system for the Lakeland Health Information Library
  • Linear accelerator
  • Neurosciences Global Positioning System
  • State-of-the-art mammotomy technology/equipment
  • Summit Quality Software for the Heart Center
