The Overproduction of Pigment

Skin color is determined by a pigment (melanin) made by specialized cells in the skin (melanocytes). The amount and type of melanin determines a person's skin color. Levels of melanin depend on race and amount of sunlight exposure. Sun exposure increases melanin production to protect the skin against harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays. In addition, hormonal changes can affect melanin production.

There are many different types of hyperpigmentation and determining if treatment is required depends on the type and cause.

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by:

  • Age Spots
  • Freckles
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PHI)
  • Melasma
  • Moles
  • Stretch Marks
  • Sun Spots
Consult your dermatologist to find out if your hyperpigmentation requires treatment or further analysis.
